The R. pomonella complex is the only group of tephritids in Ontario where examination of genitalic morphology is often necessary for routine species identification in the absence of host data.

Host: Wasbauer (1972) lists Cornus amomum Mill., C. canadensis L., C. obliqua Raf., and C. stolonifera Michx. as known host plants. The larvae feed in the fruit.
