Characteristics & Similar species
Heteromeringia flavipes, a mostly neotropical species that ranges north to Florida, resembles the more common and widespread H. czernyi (also found in Florida) in having two pairs of vibrissae, an additional upcurved posterodorsal anepisternal bristle (just before the wing base), a plumose (not pubescent) arista, a wing with a cloud around the cross-veins, and a small rounded surstylus with an internal process that sometimes has scale-like bristles. Heteromeringia flavipes differs from H. czerny in having yellow legs with the mid tibia brown; the medial cloud on the wing is also much fainter.
