Characteristics
A bifid surstylus is the most diagnostic character of Sobarocephala interrupta, but a laterally brown or entirely yellow scutellum and anteriorly divided notal stripes can be used to identify both sexes.

Similar species
Sobarocephala setipes
has a colour pattern similar to that of S. interrupta, but the anterior margin of the postsutural stripe is not divided (if present) , the anterior lateral scutellar bristle is reduced to absent, the surstylus is broadly rounded and the male fifth sternite has a comb of bristles.

Distribution
Sobarocephala interrupta
is found along the southeastern coastal states from Texas to South Carolina. One female specimen tentatively identified as S. interrupta was collected in Illinois, but this may prove to be an atypical specimen of S. setipes, which is already known from the state.

Biology
Specimens have been collected in bogs and have been recorded from dung and slime mould.
