Corrigendum

Although not explicitly stated by Sheffield et al. (2011), large parts of the text for the species descriptions used in that work were taken from the various treatments of the genus Megachile by Mitchell (1926, 1927, 1934, 1935a, 1935b; 1936a, 1936b, 1937a, 1937b, 1937c), especially Mitchell (1962), in addition to Sheffield and Westby (2007). From Mitchell (1962), which covers much of the Canadian fauna excluding exclusively western native and more recently introduced species, the text was modified only where appropriate to reflect different interpretations of characters or to add descriptions of additional characters, and to keep the descriptions standardized across all taxa occurring in Canada. The formatting style of the text for species descriptions in Sheffield et al. (2011) was also modified from that of Mitchell (1962) to allow the head, mesosoma, and metasoma of each sex to be covered as separate sections, with consistent numbering of structures in each body region used to allow rapid comparison of structures across taxa.
For consistency with descriptions used by Mitchell (1962), Sheffield et al. (2011) used the same morphological terminology and the adjectives describing them, including for sexes described for the first time (i.e., M. circumcincta (Kirby) – prior to Sheffield et al. (2011) this species was previously known as M. giliae Cockerell, and from the male only), for species occurring in Canada but not treated in that work because they are western taxa (M. angelarum Cockerell, M. coquilletti Cockerell, M. gentilis Cresson, M. lippiae Cockerell, M. onobrychidis Cockerell, M. anograe Cockerell, M. casadae Cockerell, M. manifesta Cresson, M. sublaurita Mitchell, M. subnigra Cresson, M. umatillensis (Mitchell), M. wheeleri Mitchell, M. fidelis Cresson, M. mellitarsis Cresson, M. dentitarsis Sladen, and M. perihirta Cockerell) and for species not treated previously as their introductions were only detected since his work (i.e., M. ericetorum Lepeletier; M. lapponicus Thompson; M. sculpturalis Smith). For each species covered by Sheffield et al. (2011), the following works were consulted and the text from some descriptions was used with the emendations as noted above: M. parallela Smith – Mitchell 1937a: 49-51; 1962: 159-1961; M. angelarum Cockerell – Mitchell 1937c: 386-388; M. campanulae Robertson – Mitchell 1937c: 389-390; 1962: 182-184; M. apicalis Spinola – Mitchell 1926: 113-114; 1962: 120-121; M. rotundata (Fabricius) – Mitchell 1962: 122-124; M. brevis Say – Mitchell 1935a: 14-18; 1962: 115; M. coquilletti Cockerell – Mitchell 1935a: 21-23; M. gentilis Cresson – Mitchell 1935a: 23-25; M. lippiae Cockerell – Mitchell 1935a: 37-38; M. mendica Cresson – Mitchell 1935a: 26-28, 31-32; 1962: 117-118; M. onobrychidis Cockerell – Mitchell 1935a: 18-19; M. texana Cresson – Mitchell 1935a: 32-36; 1962: 118-120; M. centuncularis (Linnaeus) – Mitchell 1935b: 159-161; 1962: 124-125; M. inermis Provancher – Mitchell 1935b: 171-173; 1962: 126-127; M. lapponica Thompson – Mitchell 1934: 311-312; 1962: 129; Sheffield and Westby 2007: 188-189; M. montivaga Cresson – Mitchell 1935b: 167-169; 1962: 127-128; M. relativa Cresson – Mitchell 1935b: 163-164; 1962: 129-130; M. anograe Cockerell – Mitchell 1927: 115-117; 1934: 329-330; 1936: 158-159, 160-162; M. casadae Cockerell – Mitchell 1936b: 348-350; M. manifesta Cresson – Mitchell 1936b: 352-354; M. sublaurita Mitchell – Mitchell 1927: 117; 1934: 344-345; M. subnigra Cresson – Mitchell 1934: 318-319, 336-337, 338-339; 1936b: 364-366, 372; M. umatillensis (Mitchell) – Mitchell 1927: 118-121; 1936: 153-155; M. wheeleri Mitchell – Mitchell 1927: 107-109, 109-112; 1936b: 355-357; M. fidelis Cresson – Mitchell 1937b: 180-182; M. mellitarsis Cresson – 1937b: 194-196; M. pugnata Say – 1937b: 201-203; 1962: 179-180; M. addenda Cresson – Mitchell 1935b: 178-180; 1962: 131-132; M. circumcincta (Kirby) – Mitchell 1935b: 186-187; M. dentitarsis Sladen – Mitchell 1936: 127-128; M. fortis Cresson – Mitchell 1936: 143-144; 1962: 156-157; M. frigida Smith – 1962: 133-134; M. gemula Cresson – 1935b: 181-183, 185-186; 1962: 135-136; M. latimanus Say – Mitchell 1936: 131-133; 1962: 157-158; M. melanophaea Smith – Mitchell 1935b: 190-192, 195-197; 1962: 138-140; M. perihirta Cockerell – Mitchell 1936: 136-137.
