Characteristics & Distribution
The presence of dorsal setulae on vein R1 is diagnostic for Chaetoclusia Coquillett, a small genus (13 species) found throughout the Neotropical Region but most diverse in Central America and the Caribbean (Lonsdale & Marshall 2006a). Chaetoclusia species also have a ventrally reduced annulus and a minute anterior lateral scutellar bristle (larger in Chaetoclusia richardfreyi (Sóos)), but these states occur independently in a number of Sobarocephala, including some species that have been collected with Chaetoclusia species.

The type species of this genus, Chaetoclusia bakeri Coquillett, is widespread outside of the Caribbean. Chaetoclusia bakeri is the only relatively common Chaetoclusia and is the only species in the genus with a densely plumose arista (a character also found in some superficially similar Sobarocephala species).

Relationships
Chaetoclusia was revised by Lonsdale & Marshall (2006a), who provided a phylogenetic analysis and a key to all species. Chaetoclusia is the sister group to the clade containing Sobarocephala + Procerosoma, which differs from Chaetoclusia in having an open cell bm, no presutural intra-alar bristle (also found in the Clusiodinae), and a small pregonite. The monotypic genera Chaetoclusiella Soós and Trichoclusia Soós are now treated as junior synonyms of Chaetoclusia.

North American species: None.
